The toxins created by decaying material and fish waste could have built up to a dangerous level if the pond was allowed to freeze. There needs to be an opening in the ice for the exchange of oxygen and toxins to take place. It also is a bad idea to chop at or crack the ice on the surface of the pond. The fish could die from the vibrations or sound waves.
